Where are the Mountains?

To say Florida is different than Oregon is an understatement.

Not only did I decide to temporarily move to another state, but I decided to move pretty much as far across the country as possible.

This was by no means my intention. I was never looking to move to Florida. The thought never crossed my mind until I saw the job posting I applied for.

I was having a difficult time finding a job and then I saw an open communications position at the Orange Bowl and the Boca Raton Bowl. I knew it would be an incredible opportunity, so I decided to apply.

I thought that there was no way I would get the position, mostly because the position start date on the application was the day after I applied.

But, I got a phone call the next day and within a week I found myself in South Florida.

If you know me, you know that I am not the “Miami type.” My friends and I all laugh at the fact that I, out of all people, ended up near Miami.

Luckily, I have been crazy busy at work. I have been working nights, early mornings, weekends, etc.

I only say luckily because I have had little time to think about the fact that I am actually in Miami, thousands of miles away from my family, in an area that is basically all city and is super flat.

I am someone who loves to hike. If you’ve ever been to Florida before, you know that it is completely….. FLAT.

Hiking is one of the things I miss the most.

This past week was a little less crazy than the previous weeks, and I found myself missing home a little more than usual.

Even though I don’t want to live in Miami forever, it has been a great experience and I am so glad that I am here right now. It’s a fun place to live temporarily. I have always loved the beach and tropical areas and I always wondered if I would like to live in an area that is always warm/hot. I now know that I don’t.

I miss the cold weather. I never thought I would say that, but it’s true. I am a sucker for the Hallmark Christmas movies and I turned one on the other day when it was about 90 degrees fahrenheit outside with about 90% humidity. It did not feel right at all.

It was actually funny because I saw pictures from home and pictures from friends in Colorado where it is cold and had already snowed. I was shocked and was so surprised that it had already snowed. I thought this was not normal and I found myself wondering why it had gotten cold so early.

Then I realized… It’s November. It’s almost December. It’s supposed to be cold.

I then walked outside and my sunglasses fogged up from the humidity and it was as hot as ever.

I now know that I don’t want to live in a place like this my whole life. I got my taste of living in a tropical area, and now I think I’m ready to have seasons again.

I have no idea where I will be going after this job ends in January, but I’m ready for another adventure. For now, I’m going to enjoy my time in South Florida. Hopefully I’ll get to explore Florida more if I get some free time. There are so many places in Florida I want to visit and I’m going to do my best to do so while I’m here.
