Change of Plans. Living in Florida!

I woke up determined to buy a plane ticket to Hawaii. After months of waiting around and trying to find a job, I could only laugh when I got an email that same morning that would change my plan completely.

I left the University of Oregon determined to find a job that wasn’t in the sports industry. After being a Communications Intern at the University of Oregon Athletics Department, I thought that a sports career was not for me.

Don’t get me wrong… I absolutely loved my time working with Oregon Athletics, but the schedule was absolutely insane. I am a person who likes to have a consistent schedule. It is very hard to have a consistent schedule when you are working all different sporting events at all times of the day while being in school and being involved with a student-run public relations firm.

After I graduated, I had a few months to think about what I wanted. I had time to think about my future career. I was looking for a job with a public relations firm and things just weren’t working out.

Frustrated with the job search, I finally had something to look forward to…. The first Oregon football game of the season.

As soon as the game came on I knew what I wanted to do.

I wanted to get back into sports.

In that exact moment, I realized how much I missed working for Oregon Athletics. I knew that I wanted a career in the sports industry. I knew that I loved working with football.

And so my job search changed completely. I found a job opportunity working for the Orange Bowl and the Boca Raton Bowl in Florida. I didn’t think I would get it because on the application it said that the start date was the next day. There was no way they didn’t already have somebody or would want someone who is across the country.

I decided to apply anyway…

I was shocked when I got an email the next day saying they wanted to do a phone interview.

Guess what… Within a week I moved to Florida.

I am so grateful for this opportunity and I can’t wait to start this journey.

Finding a job can be so frustrating. There is so much waiting, but once something happens, it happens really fast.

The past few months have been really stressful and have definitely tested me. Although it has been difficult at times, the whole process has taught me important lessons.

Did you have a frustrating experience searching for a job? Do you have any advice for others looking for a job?
